High Museum 2015 Event - Gordon Parks: Segregation Story

Saturday June 6, 2015 08:00 PM EDT
Cost: $12-$19.50

From the venue:

It should go without saying that Gordon Parks was one of the most prolific documentarians in American history. Sure, the legendary filmmaker was the first African-American staff photographer and writer for Life magazine, but it’s Park’s catalogue documenting poverty, the Civil Rights Movement, and urban life that cemented his status as one of the most prominent creative minds of his time. In fact, he was ahead of his time. The High Museum of Art will display Gordon Parks: Segregation Story, an exhibition featuring more than 40 color prints from Park’s 1956 Life photo essay, “The Restraints: Open and Hidden.” The essay, one of Park’s earliest explorations into the societal differences in the country, centers on the lives of an extended African-American family in segregated Alabama, and the exhibit is part of the High’s collection of Civil Rights era photography. Count it as one history lesson you won’t sleep through.
