Shakespeare Tavern presents a puckish take on the Bard — and harks back to Atlanta theater history — with its revival of HAMLET! THE MUSICAL. First produced at Theatrical Outfit and musically adapted by Eddie Levi Lee, Rebecca Wackler and Phillip DePoy, this 21st-century take on the melancholy Dane envisions the afterlife for theater people, in which the damned souls of film stars, entertainment journalists, etc., must pay their penance by performing an irreverent musical version of Shakespeare’s tragedy. Drew Reeves directs and provides new material, with J.C. Long playing Hamlet. Not to be confused with Steve Coogan’s Hamlet 2 or that “Gilligan’s Island” episode when they did a musical Hamlet.
