Music

If you’re an enlightened rock fan who wants to hear something new, why not try out the Hold Steady? Since forming in 2000, this New York City band has been garnering plaudits from critics and fans for its loud, chugging sound and Craig Finn’s witty, sarcastic lyrics. And unlike many of its indie-rock peers, the Hold Steady makes music with meat on the bones, bearing comparisons to past heartland-friendly cynics such as Cracker and John Hiatt. Two rough-and-tumble hard-rock bands, Swearing at Motorists and the Plastic Constellations, also perform at the Hold Steady’s Feb. 4 show. $10. 9:30 p.m. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-522-3950. www.badearl.com.
