Hot dogs

From Marietta to Sandy Springs

Whether you call them red hots, frankfurters, dawgs, tubesteaks or dirty water dogs, there's no debating the hot dog's royal status among edible Americana.

Barker's Red Hots: The piped-in sounds of waves and seagulls set the scene at this colorful boardwalk-themed spot. The beef and pork hot dogs, made especially for Barker's, are cooked to order over old-fashioned lump charcoal, then nestled into a warmed bun. You can then top them with any item imaginable – including the restaurant's signature hot sauce. The french fries are decent, but the freshly made sweet onion rings are downright addictive. 3000 Windy Hill Road, Marietta. 770-272-0407.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries: This beloved D.C. franchise known for its fresh-cut fries and killer burgers surprisingly makes one mean hot dog. The 100 percent kosher hot dogs are split in half and cooked cut-side down on the grill alongside the bun. This method yields a juicy dog with crisp edges you can top with the same laundry list of items for the burgers, but they're so tasty, we like them naked. 1253 Caroline St. Suite 100. 404-688-6474.

Mike's Chicago Hot Dogs: Windy City natives can finally stop searching because Mike's does Chicago-style dogs proud. Each 100 percent pure-beef Vienna hot dog – best eaten "all the way" – is served on a steaming poppy-seed bun and topped with mustard, relish, onions, hot peppers, a pickle, tomato slice and celery salt. Each bite is a symphony of contrasting flavors and textures guaranteed to wow you regardless of your allegiances. 5948 Roswell Road, Sandy Springs. 404-252-8484.
