Tucked away in Pine Lake, just south of the shadow of Stone Mountain, Frank Coon and his crew of DJs keep the tradition of independent radio alive, albeit with a 21st-century approach. HoundogRadio.com has been broadcasting on the Internet since June 2000, and while it may be small in size, its love of great music is as large as the rock in the back yard.
Coon, who has been blind since birth, developed a lifelong infatuation with radio as a small child. HoundogRadio.com is his dream come true. Funded by listener donations and some sponsorships, the 24/7 station features three to six hours of live programming daily, and is automated the rest of the time. Coon and his DJs each focus their weekly shows on their personal favorite forms of music, typically country, blues, classic rock and oldies.
Coon hosts the station's flagship and longest-running live show, "Saturday Night Jam," which airs from 8 p.m.-midnight. His wife, Cathy, fills her Friday evening slot with "Silly Love Songs." Other weeknight shows deliver an amazing variety of jazz, Cajun and alternative music, presented by Eric Jefferson, Dave Boyd, Joe Koufman, and Nick Sommers.
The programming focuses on regional independent artists who are often overlooked by commercial stations, with some preference given to Georgia musicians.
"I'm pretty fricking proud of what we do here," says Coon. "There's a lot of good music here in Georgia that needs to be heard."
