Atlantan Joycelyn A. Wilson -- a correspondent and contributor to rap mags XXL, Scratch and the Source -- spoke about Southern hip-hop culture at the 13th annual biennial meeting of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music in Rome last week. That's Rome, Italy, not Georgia, playa. At Università La Sapienza, Wilson chronicled the evolution of Southern hip-hop from the early '80s to the present, including the current wave of OutKast, Lil Jon, Ludacris and T.I. "Southern hip-hop is one of the most misunderstood genres," says Wilson. "Therefore, it's an honor and a necessity to talk truthfully about this culture, especially overseas, where very little is written about Southern rap despite its worldwide expansion."
Promoland: Nettles and Bon Jovi duet
Set your TiVos, folks. New Jersey's Bon Jovi and Atlanta's Sugarland are scheduled to perform together on "CMT Crossroads," premiering Sept. 16. The bands are set to deliver each other's music in a show to be taped Tues., Aug. 9, at that cradle of country music, New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. "Crossroads" routinely pairs country acts with artists from other genres to, according to CMT, "play together, swap stories, and share their common love of music." And of course there's a promo angle. You think they do this stuff solely because they love music? Oh, you poor misguided soul. Bon Jovi's new album, Have a Nice Day, scheduled for release Sept. 20, includes the song "Who Says You Can't Go Home," a duet with Sugarland's lead singer Jennifer Nettles. More info is available at www.CMT.com. OK, now where's my payola for printing this stuff?
Eye on the air
Remember when MTV actually played music videos? Eye Music Network, an Atlanta-based video music channel, will launch Aug. 4 and is offering a free month of broadcast from Sept. 1--30. Crawford Communications carries the satellite feed. Eye's target audience is the amazingly wide 18-51 age-range. Unfortunately, all you 52-year-olds are S-O-L.
