Not since defining the middle ground between post-punk and indie rock in the ’80s with the Smiths has guitarist Johnny Marr crafted such stylishly freewheeling pop as what he delivers with his latest album, The Messenger. Although his catalog is filled with collaborations and appearances with Talking Heads, Pretenders, Pet Shop Boys, and more, recent songs such as “Upstarts,” “The Messenger,” and “Generate! Generate!” find Marr fully embracing his voice for the first time. The results add depth to his artistic repertoire. His integral demeanor is a far cry from that of his famously bitchy ex-bandmate Morrissey, who can’t seem to book a show without canceling it. It’s difficult to imagine these night-and-day characters playing together in one of the greatest alternative rock bands of all time. At least Marr still knows how to rock the stage.
