Judi Chicago: "Fun City" b/w "Degenerate Sun"

Self-released

Judi Chicago's latest 7-inch tempers the group's old-school house music allegiances with rich, Roxy Music pop grooves that come as a welcome change. Still, the song is a comedic lament over the harsh realities of a night in clubland, where "these pretty girls aren't so pretty when they turn up the lights in the clubs of Fun City." With the B-side, "Degenerate Son," vocalist and keyboard/guitar player Ben Coleman still spouts absurd ruminations ("I want a hot dog in a bun/You've got one, I need one"), but the shift toward honest and somewhat earnest songwriting is refreshing as well. Judi Chicago gets away with a lot of bratty sass in ways that no one else in town can pull off. Why aren't they signed to Virgin? 4 out of 5 stars.
