Latin bakeries

BUFORD HIGHWAY FARMERS’ MARKET: This temple to all things ethnic is much improved after an extensive face-lift. The bakery, however, remains deliciously unchanged with its wide assortment of mostly Mexican baked goods. Don’t miss the large sprinkle-encrusted sugar cookies, or the besos (kisses), an orange-shaped cake/cookie hybrid filled with a kiss of jam and encrusted in a thick layer of powdered sugar. Any of the fresh pan dulces (sweet bread) are perfect alongside your morning coffee. 5600 Buford Highway, Doraville. 770-455-0770.

LA CHURRERIA CAFÉ AND BAKERY: Any establishment with "churro" in the name is an automatic winner in my book. This tiny bakery on the lower end of Buford Highway will fry churros (long, deep-fried Mexican doughnuts) to order if you ask nicely. The sugar-and-cinnamon-covered treats come in two styles: filled with cajeta (a thick caramel-like spread) or traditional. Each crunchy churro is best warm, but will keep for a few hours. Another must-try is the sweet or savory half-moon arepas from Colombia. Each thick arepa is slightly sweet, dense and studded with corn; the cheese version is the best. 3336 Buford Highway. 404-477-1811.

LA SUPREMA PANADERIA: No other bakery can compete with this aptly named chain of bakeries with locations throughout Atlanta. All the Mexican bakery standards are here, but the absolute reason to visit are the piguinos, which look like a Hostess cream-filled cupcake on steroids. Seriously, you need a fork to eat a piguino and it could very well serve two depending on the degree of your chocolate lust. 461-C Windy Hill Road, Marietta, 770-435-2488; and other metro Atlanta locations.
