In our year-end issue, we noted that one of the things we'd miss during 2006 is alt-country guitarist John McLean. Last October, McLean moved to Lakeland, Fla., to help his father cope with the loss of John's mother.
We didn't expect to see McLean for a while, but he unexpectedly returned to Atlanta earlier this month. "I was pleasantly surprised to come back so soon," he says. "Time heals lots of things, and [my father] was doing better enough that I could come back and continue my career."
Local fans will be happy to learn that McLean is rejoining his three bandsSonoramic Commando, Caroline and the Ramblers, and the Blue Jays. (The latter group is issuing a new CD, A Hundred Songs, on April 25.) And he's also getting into acting, appearing in local plays such as Savage Tree Arts Project's production of Requiem for a Heavyweight. All in all, says McLean, "I'm ecstatic to be back."
Andrews Upstairs, the 400-person-capacity Buckhead club where Maroon 5, Sarah McLachlan, Patterson Hood and many others have performed, celebrates its third anniversary this month. The owners are throwing a party Thurs., March 30, and OutKast's touring band, Whild Peach, will help commemorate the occasion. Expect plenty of drink specials and other good stuff.
Local musicians are encouraged to submit entries for CD manufacturer DiscMakers' Independent Music World Series. Successful entrants will get a chance to play in an Atlanta showcase Sept. 21, and compete for $5,000 and plenty of studio gear. The deadline is May 3. See www.discmakers.com/imws for details.

Yes, 14 is the correct answer. I'll pass your info along to the group's manager,…
