Boulevard, Kenny Burns, Jennifer Nettles, Abyss, Album 88

There are lots of random news items this week. First up, Athens band Boulevard is competing in the first round of the Zig-Zag Live Club Tour spring 2006 contest. If it earns enough votes, it'll get a chance to play on the tour, and compete for a grand prize of appearing at this year's CMJ Music Festival. You can vote for the group by going to www.zigzaglive.com/voting and clicking on the "Vote in New York" button. Thanks to Atlanta Music Guide for the tip. ... Music industry veteran and local gadfly Kenny Burns is starting a new record label, according to hip-hop website www.allhiphop.com. The imprint, Studio 43 Group, is inspired by the notoriously decadent '70s nightclub Studio 54. Burns' first artist is Washington, D.C., rapper Wale. ... Congratulations to Sugarland member Jennifer Nettles. She picked up a Collaborative Video of the Year award for her duet with Bon Jovi, "Who Says You Can't Go Home," at the 2006 CMT Music Awards.

In this week's noteworthy concerts, hard-rock band Abyss issues its new album, NvP, with a Fri., April 21, gig at Sweetwater Bar and Grill. The Enders and October Frequency also will perform. ... WRAS-FM (88.5) Album 88 celebrates its 35th year with a Sat., April 22, benefit at Eyedrum. The benefit features the Brunettes, DQE, Au Revoir Simone, the Extruders and Cinemechanica. ... Rob's House Records marks the release of several new 7-inch singles with a Sat., April 22, concert at Lenny's. Bands on the bill include A Fir-Ju Well, Rizzudo, Deerhunter and Hubcap City. ... Gonzo electronic band Lid Emba celebrates its new Reason Isn't Radar with a Wed., April 26, show at Lenny's. Others performing include Michael Columbia, Music for the People and Celephais. The night also marks idiosyncratic MC Zano's birthday.
