Rough Times

Rough Draft, the blues band featuring former CL contributor Bryan Powell, won the acoustic music (Solo/Duo Competition) division of the Atlanta Blues Society's "Blues Challenge 2005" last week at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Atlanta. As a result, Powell reports that the band has been invited to compete in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January. You can catch Powell in a solo setting at his next Rough Draft gig at the intimate 37 Main in Buford Dec. 3. Also, Big Robert T took first place in the Band Competition and the Larry Griffith Band won the People's Choice award. Shonali Gets Invited Up

Invite Them Up is a CD/DVD from Comedy Central Records featuring the best bits from three nights of a freewheeling comedy festival in New York's East Village. Stand-up comics Eugene Mirman and Bobby Tisdale helm the madness with appearances from former Atlantan David Cross, former Chant conspirator Todd Barry and Ultrababyfat co-founder Shonali Bhomik. The four-disc set drops like a rubber chicken Dec. 6.

Leave it to Happenstance

Brian Fletcher, in addition to his duties as kick ass drummer for Luigi, is cookin' up that wacky Rock Lottery thing again this year. It's now called "The Happenstance" and it's expanding to include local filmmakers as well as quick-thinking musicians. It happen(stance)s Dec. 17 at the Earl and deadline to sign up at www.thehappenstance.com is Nov. 30. At press time, they were still working out details, but one of their ideas is to send a film crew to shoot a quickie documentary of the event, then edit it and show the completed film that same night before the lottery-assembled bands perform. Reality TV gone wild.
