Majette to see doctor for tin ear?

Denise Majette's candidacy for the 4th District Democratic congressional primary is often refreshingly unpolitician-like. The former judge lacks polish and has a real aversion to sound bites. But sometimes there's just no substitute for political chops.

Take last Thursday's story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution regarding the radio attack ads that Majette's opponent, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, is running. They accuse Majette of being an "angry, out-of-control judge," charges that stem from a run-in with defendant Linda Hamilton in a 1998 speeding case.

Anyone who has been involved with the court system for any length of time knows that every judge has a case or two in which they'd like to have the proverbial do-over. But instead of acknowledging the case, Majette told the reporter she didn't know the basis for the accusations in McKinney's radio spot. That effectively created a second-day story in which the AJC reporter researched the case and wrote about it in Saturday's paper. So McKinney got a double shot of publicity for her ads, and she didn't even have to pay for it.

Truth is, Creative Loafing asked Majette about the Hamilton case a week before the first story ran -- it's been circulating for months -- and she gave a detailed description of her side of it. While it seems Majette may have made some missteps in the case, the situation overall appears pretty unremarkable given the thousands of cases she heard during her roughly nine years on the bench.

Seems Majette could use a lesson on the fine art of spin.
