Mama's Gun: Routes to Riches

Candelion

It's all about the changes. The U.K. soul-funk outfit's music starts with familiar chords and consistently transitions into the most intricate, yet accessible, band music around. Already a hit in the U.K. with several charting singles, the five-piece band is due to release its anticipated U.S. debut in October (an import is available now). Mama's Gun knows no musical boundaries, channeling artists ranging from Prince and Maroon 5 to Steely Dan and Booker T & the MGs. "You Are the Music" embodies classical, soul and pop with a rhapsodic sweep, while "Supa Sneakers" boasts addictive funk and new age punk. Amber-gauzed lenses color the serene "Pots of Gold" and "Let's Find a Way" with ethereal vocals and sunray grooves, revealing the emotional depth of a band whose sway is as compelling as its rock. (5 out of 5 stars)
