Martin Luther McCoy: Love is the Hero

Rebel Soul Records

He's the most unsung black rocker alive, despite alliances with the Roots and the OkayPlayer set. On his second indie release in a year, Martin Luther McCoy quietly delivers a set of soulful R&B with rock fringes and the most sensitive lyrics you're likely to hear from a rocker this year. With Love is the Hero, the resonant McCoy delivers what very well may be his magnum opus. Considering the brilliance of songs such as "There You Go," "And Furthermore," and "Everything Is U," it's a shame that the Rebel Soul hasn't reached bigger platforms or broader audiences. He deserves a hero's helping of love. (5 out of 5 stars)
