One of the core collections within the Hammonds House Museum’s holdings are it’s traditional African artifacts. A combination of works collected by Dr. Hammonds during his life time and supplemented by artifacts from donating collectors, the various mask, sculptures, textiles, and assorted paraphernalia offer a glimpse into various traditions on the African continent. The philosophies and spiritual symbolism contained in many of these traditional objects must be given attention if we are to understand the underpinnings of cultural views still held by many from the various countries and social groups in Africa and throughout the African Diaspora.
