The world of pop music just wrapped up its Summer of Butts, thanks to booty-centric singles from Nicki Minaj, Meghan Trainor, Jennifer Lopez, and the like. And then there’s Mastodon. Atlanta’s almighty metal behemoth jumped in on the action in September with the epic twerk battle that rocked the world in the “The Motherload” video — one of the catchiest songs from the band’s 2014 album, Once More ‘Round the Sun. There was instant backlash: Some declared the video sexist, but the voices of dissent were silenced when one of the dancers spoke out to defend her craft. Now, the group brings its monster mash of proggy and melodic metal thunder to the stage for another happy homecoming. Expect to hear all the hits and more. European tourmates Gojira and Kvelertak set the night in motion.
