Cleveland duo Mr. Gnome exemplifies fire and ice by balancing delicate pop and slashing prog-metal squalls. Brunette siren Nicole Barille’s gossamer voice flutters above the fray, echoing the rarefied beauty of the group’s gentler moments. The clamor is deployed more strategically on the duo’s third full-length, Madness in Miniature, as its song craft comes into greater focus with less neck-snapping stylistic shifts than it has on prior releases. Similarly, Barille’s vocals have grown stronger and more versatile.
