Music: Monterey Jazz Festival

Fri., Feb. 8

Since its inaugural event in 1958, which kicked off with legendary performances by Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong, the MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL has been a highly influential showcase. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, festival organizers have assembled a squad of top players led by trumpeter Terence Blanchard (best-known as a soundtrack composer for film director Spike Lee; pictured) and the great saxophonist James Moody for a cross-country tour. The ensemble reaches Atlanta Fri., FEB. 8. $30-$50. 8 p.m. Woodruff Arts Center, Atlanta Symphony Hall, 1280 Peachtree St. 404-733-5000. www.atlantasymphony.org.
