See & Do - Music: The National September 05 2007

Sat., Sept. 8

Brooklyn, N.Y., band THE NATIONAL plays the kind of gutsy rock music that prompts the audience to chant along without massive, obvious choruses. Matt Berninger sings words full of personal insight as the band builds dramatic, piano-led arrangements around him, pushing the repeated phrases – “Fake Empire” and “Mistaken for Strangers,” to name two cuts found on the band’s MySpace page – to the fore. Its recent appearance at the Earl was a sold-out affair; a Sat., SEPT. 8, gig at Variety Playhouse will allow for more fans, but early ticket purchase is still advised. $15. 8:30 p.m. 1099 Euclid Ave. 404-524-7354. www.variety-playhouse.com.
