Music: These Are Powers

Sun., Sept. 21

The term "ghost punk" is often used to describe THESE ARE POWERS' marriage of creepy and calamitous pop, punk and noisy excursions. The Brooklyn/Chicago trio features former Liars bassist Pat Noecker, guitarist/vocalist Anna Barie and drummer Bill Salas churning out a tussle of drones and catchy but antagonistic hooks where staccato rhythms rattle in an ominous aural haze. It's the polar opposite of the Coathangers' squelching and fun-loving punk anthems. The show Sun., SEPT. 21, is rife with these kinds of equal but opposite sounds pulling listeners in different directions. Houston haunting folk songstress Jana Hunter and Baltimore's avant-folkie Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez also perform. $5-$8. Eyedrum Art & Music Gallery, 290 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Suite 8. 404-522-0655. www.eyedrum.org.
