Visual Art

Hailing from London and Houston, respectively, and using materials as off the wall as old newspapers and bacon, artists MATT BRYANS and DEMETRIUS OLIVER are united in one thing: their brainy but emotionally arresting work currently on view at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center through DEC. 9. Oliver’s photographs feature the artist in abject and humiliating postures. He smears his face with cake frosting or crowns his head with a bacon mohawk (right, “Seminole”) in scenes referencing Mark Twain and Herman Melville. Bryans creates his melancholy landscapes by erasing and scrubbing away newspaper text and images and replacing them with new, often haunting, scenes. Some of the spookiest stuff you can experience outside of a haunted house this Halloween. $3-$5. Tues.-Sat., 11 a.m.-5 p.m. 535 Means St. 404-688-1970. www.thecontemporary.org.
