Dr. Rotenstein will explain how Jewish religious leaders developed a system to extend the home's walls beyond property lines and into public space. The method they developed is called an eruv. An eruv is a virtual courtyard that encloses Jewish communities and there are three in DeKalb County. David Rotenstein graduated from Georgia State University and worked as an archaeologist with the Georgia DOT before attending graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania. He has a Ph.D. in Folklore and Folklife and he has worked in public history and historic preservation for more than 25 years.
