This exhibit features Joe Louis, the first well-known African American boxer, using text and images to highlight his childhood, key fights, and Army years. Most images are drawn from collections in MARBL. The opening includes fight programs and film clips of matches against Max Baer (1935), Max Schmeling (1936 and 1938), and Billy Conn (1946). The exhibit travels in the spring to Louis’ birthplace in Alabama, his hometown of Detroit, and the cities of his key bouts, Chicago and New York City, before returning to Emory. Part of the Race and Sports in American Culture Series. Jones Room, Level 3
