Beer Pick of the Week - Poperings Hommel Ale

This is among a class of Belgian abbey ales that are influenced by American hop happiness; yet the result is more subtle and definitely Belgian. Poperings is a region of Belgium known for it hops (“hommel” in the local dialect). Locally grown Gold and Hallertau hops combine with typical Belgian yeasts to give this hazy, burnished-gold ale a positively heady aroma of spices, citrus and yeast. The taste is tangy and earthy, with hints of clove and orange peel. A sour grape and honey sweetness pops up ever so briefly. The finish is pleasantly dry and grassy, with a slightly alcoholic warmth. The body is nearly perfect, at once lively with carbonation and oily with hops. This is an easy-drinking, refreshing, and superbly crafted beer.
