Fishing Music is the brainstorm of musicians/fishermen Ben Winship and David Thompson, who are joined by several well-known (and a few not-so-well-known) artists, including the brother-sister team of Tim and Mollie O'Brien, guitarist David Grier, and dobro player Rob Ickes. Winship and Thompson wanted to create an album of music that celebrated their favorite avocation. The material they selected runs the gamut from their original "newgrass" compositions to tunes such as "Fly Fishing" by Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington and Peggy Lee's "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'," and the classic "Lazy River" by Hoagy Carmichael. Of course, they had to include "The Fishing Hole," better known as the Andy Griffith theme. Sung by Mollie O'Brien, the tune takes on a peppy jazz flavor. A few traditional tunes round out the set, and fit in perfectly.
Fishing may be one of America's favorite pastimes, and now that we have some bona fide musical accompaniment, it will be even more fun.
