The struggle on Muscles to overcome sentimental desperation without reciprocation is set in motion by a wash of Casio-beats and lo-fi blubbering in "I Luv the Valley, Oh!" and "Bunny Gamer (b)." Mutant pop tones take shape, swell and collapse into pulsating puddles of primordial sonic ooze. This primitive and sappy calamity comes to a head as the post-apocalyptic folk balladry of the title track and "Nieces Pieces" unfold with bizarre sexual tension and vague imagery of coming of age in the shadow of familial affairs filled with death and both physical and mental abuse.
Throughout the recording warbly vocalization and fragmented subject matter solidify unavoidable similarities between Stewart and Joy Division singer Ian Curtis contrasted with Tiny Tim. But what sets Stewart apart is he finds just as much solace in his own words as he does the vapid drones and lifeless clatter. Fabulous Muscles is Stewart's not-so-cuddly companion, a collection of the kind of fragmented frustration that can only be the reflection of unreciprocated affection.
