First up was Apache Cafe's weekly Mic Club MC battle presented by 4 Kings Entertainment's DRES tha Beatnik. The Binkis Recs! crew -- Jax, Flux and Killa Kalm -- was present, celebrating the release of The Reign Begins, and Jax sat by the entrance selling merch as the battling began.
As Georgia Tech students filtered in, the specter of 8 Mile was in plain view on their pale faces. Suddenly the old New York saying "Bridge & Tunnel crowd" made more sense. But whatever the crowd's motivation, it was reassuring to see an enthusiastic response as combatants traded verses and curses.
Finally Binkis Recs! took the stage and took control of the beat, busting sweaty routines over rare-to-raw groove. "Our main tradition is having a live show," said Jax of Binkis' highly energetic ensemble. "We don't just walk around saying songs and grabbing crotches. We incorporate all kinds of beats, new and old -- and focus on lyrics."
While the Apache show was about focusing on flow, OutKast's packed CD release party at Vision was all about those flowing in and out of the VIP. It was around 1:30 a.m. when Big Boi pulled up in a black stretch Hummer. And not long after that, Andre 3000 rolled his way through the near-capacity crowd to join Big Gipp, T-Mo, Khujo, Usher, Mr. DJ, Slimm Calhoun, Brian Barber, Frank Ski and several others beyond the raised railing. While Goodie Mob briefly passed the mic through a selection of classics, most in the crowd were passing drinks. All of which made for an evening of radically different perspectives on success.
Drive to succeed: Last Saturday, former Atlantan and Liquified resident Kazell packed the Crescent Room with bodies and bass-bin bump to celebrate the release of his debut mix CD, Driven, for Velocity Records. Kazell's selections reflected his first-rate tendency toward pounding, percussive house and quivering melodic tribal -- and showed why he's become such an in-demand L.A. fixture.
