Rich Pick: Best theater company: Georgia Shakespeare

Staff Pick

The spirit of “the show must go on” is alive and well at GEORGIA SHAKESPEARE. The economic downturn forced the company to cancel its annual open-air Shake at the Lake production in Piedmont Park this year, but rather than wallow in its own slump, the company produced one of its most interesting summer repertories in years. It may not be a surprise that the company could present a madcap version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and a grand production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but Georgia Shakespeare gets special credit for its compelling staging of Titus Andronicus, Shakespeare’s most notorious and difficult play. And that’s without mentioning last fall’s musical Antigone or the summer’s family-oriented Alice in Wonderland. One can only hope we’ll catch the company by the lake next year. 4484 Peachtree Road. 404-264-0020. www.gashakespeare.org.
