Sound Menu August 08 2001 Sat
ADGG — Local quartet ADGG (A Damn Good Group) combine Southern hip-hop and Euro synth pop in a way that’s surprisingly accessible if not always compelling. Tonight, they celebrate the release of their debut CD, Joyous Pain, a solid first effort. The Library (Sarig)
BAGHOUSE, TYKES WITH GUNS, DANGER WOMAN — Baghouse is an Athens three-piece recently returned from a residency at New York’s the Knitting Factory. Think Can and Miles Davis post-fusion. South Carolina’s Tykes With Guns are a pornographic take on Ween. The members work at Kmart, resulting in the high-class inspiration for many of their Dead Milkmen-ish songs. Danger Woman, the height of the savant garde movement, does an early set before things get R-rated. She’s disabled but able to rock, and her unique karaoke stylings will rock the very foundations of your world. Eyedrum (Ware)
DANNY BARNES & THEE OLD CODGERS — See Record ReviewsRed Light Café (Horowitz)
THE B-52’s — The fact that this event is a “Classic Chastain” show proves the staying power (and lack of recent hits) of the band that put Athens, Ga., on the musical map. The B-52’s shows are still a solid slab of shimmy and smiles, and if you can’t dance this mess around, your “Strobe Light” is burned out, sister. Candy-coated fun for the whole family. Chastain Park Ampitheatre (Smith)
EAST ATLANTA ANIMAL RESOURCE BENEFIT — Local rockers the X-Impossibles, 6X, Catfight! and Puddin come together to raise funds for a grassroots neighborhood group that provides food and medical care (and attempts to find homes) for stray animals in East Atlanta. Echo Lounge (Sarig)
DAVE EDMUNDS, DAN BAIRD — This solo show is a rare stateside return for the ex-Rockpile veteran. He’s an underrated guitar picker, a terrific songwriter, distinctive singer and has his rock ‘n’ roll heart planted firmly in late-’50s rockabilly while avoiding blatant stylistic plundering. Opener Baird has a new band called the Yayhoos (see Record Reviews), but the ex-Georgia Satellite is likewise solo tonight. It’ll be interesting to see both acts retool their catalogs for the unplugged experience. Variety Playhouse (Horowitz)
FLASHBACK FEST — Sold out weeks in advance, this ’80s funk/soul package tour hits many, if not all, the old-school bases: zippy fun-funk (Zapp, Gap Band), sexy R&B crooning (Alexander O’Neal, Cherrelle), crossover jazz/pop (Blackbyrds w/Charles Earland) and local pop-funk (Brick). So what’s not to like? Despite the heat and impersonal outdoor venue, look for a stylish, enthusiastic and older audience turnout. HiFi Buys Amphitheatre (Horowitz)
HALCYON — One of the brightest lights beaming up from the Sunshine State’s fertile music scene, Halcyon is a female folk-rock duo who grew up in the Indigos’ shadow but now have matured into a world-class performing act all their own. Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)
JAD, PERMA-GRIN — Alternative rockers Jad, cover-band Perma-grin and DJs perform at this benefit to raise money for the Arthritis Foundation. Tickets, services and merchandise will be raffled. Atlanta Brewing Company (Bethea)
ALLISON JARRELL — While insipid lyrics don’t help her songs, Jarrell’s soulful vocals (sort of a cross between Tori Amos and the Cardigans) display her passion and talent. Lovers of the singer/songwriter thing will no doubt appreciate this up-and-coming local, who opts to leave her problems at home. Tonight, she’s backed by members of the Vigilantes of Love. Sweet Melissa’s (Mossman)
LO-CAL INGREDIENTS — Artist and scene-maker Karissa Hubbard, the curator of the wonderful Nagchampa series of art and music happenings, brings forth this month’s offering from her fertile garden. As usual, it’s a mostly kaleidoscope event featuring Pam Howe and Brett Busch’s Ramadamafia, Defacto, the Brand New Natives (formerly Justin Hale) and Athens’ Hunter-Gatherer. DJs T’challa, Marcus A and Mudfish spin. The Earl (Smith)
METROSCENE, SLOWEARTH, FILM, LOTUSTARR, ADOM, AERIAL — 99X presents a “Sunday School” event featuring a gaggle of like-minded, but diverse-sounding local acts. The lineup includes the Southern Brit-pop of Metroscene, the emotional turmoil of slowEarth, the modern electronica-soul of Aerial and the U2-inspired Euro-musings of Film, Adom and Lotustarr. A good sampler that should please a variety of music lovers. Earthlink Live (Smith)
MIC AGGRESSION — MCs battle for $100 and mic supremacy. A breakdance session and a performance by local rapper Jax provide relief from the action. Somber Reptile (Sarig)
N’SYNC, CHRISTINA MILIAN — Though pundits have predicted the “boy band bust” as imminent, apparently nobody’s bothered to tell N’Sync. With their new album selling like gangbusters, their “edgier” makeover a wholesale success and their bid for creative control not blowing up in their well-coiffed mugs, everything’s coming up dollars for the crowned-princes of bubblegum. Coupled with the Backstreet Boys headlong rush into “Behind the Music” territory (rehab already?), N’Sync seems destined to extend their 15 minutes. Previously heard chanting the hook on Ja Rule’s “Between Me and You,” opener Christina Milian sounds like a street-smart Christina Aguilera, looks like a young Janet Jackson and does a remarkably good J-Lo impression on her debut CD. Georgia Dome (Butler/Robertson)
PENETRATORS, JOHNNY KNOX TRIO — The Penetrators’ concerts are like ’60s beach parties, where searing instrumental rock ‘n’ roll splashes ashore in tidal waves of reverb as if from an ocean battle between Dick Dale and Ennio Morricone. Opening act the Johnny Knox Trio take a more bluesy path, but they rock just as hard. Star Bar (Nicoll)
RES, YAZARAH — MCA Records vocalist Res (pronounced “reese”) brings her neo-soul vibe and honey-coated vocals to tonight’s Soul Underground event. Opening up for her is funk/jazz heroine Yahzarah, fresh off the road as backing vocalist for Erykah Badu. Her head-nodding independent release sounds full of hits, while her stage show has been likened to that of a young Tina Turner. Jamal Ahmad and soul sista Cha Cha Jones host and control the ones and twos, along with Salah Ananse. PlanetJam Cotton Club (Garnes)
TRISHA YEARWOOD — The Georgia girl has made very good by narrowly avoiding the slick Nashville bullet while appealing to a mainstream C&W audience. She’s branched into acting, which is just as well since her 10th and latest album is a pleasant but mostly by-the-numbers collection of over-produced love songs aided by ubiquitous guests Don Henley and Vince Gill. Her compelling voice, though, adds sass and spice to even the limpest material. Fox Theatre (Horowitz)
