SATURDAY, JULY 28

EVA AYLLóN -- "The golden voice of Peru" has been one of her country's most popular exponents of Creole and Afro-Peruvian material since the 1970s. Ayllón and her 13-piece band celebrate Peru's Independence Day (and the inauguration of a new president) with a diverse program of song and dance. Variety Playhouse (Falstaff)

BELMONT PLAYBOYS, CAVE CATT SAMMY -- The Playboys blast out blood-and-thunder rockabilly, with more power than a '58 Buick Roadmaster and enough tattoos to give Ray Bradbury nightmares. Opening act Cave Cat Sammy is an up-and-coming western-swing sensation whose sound compares favorably to Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys. Star Bar (Nicoll)

CHUCK BERRY -- See listing for July 27. Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater (Robertson)

THE CAFFEINE TOUR -- Outerlimits hosts some of Caffeine (and Moonshine's) biggest names at the newly renovated Atrium. One room features trance and breaks by Micro, John Debo, Dave Trance, James Christian, J-Luv and a live performance by flashy favorite Spacegirl. The other room is ruf-and-tumble drum 'n' bass and 2-step by DB, Dara, Lion and Bobble, among others. The Atrium (Ware)

JERRY CANTRELL -- The ex-Alice In Chains' guitarist released an accomplished solo debut three years ago, but has kept a low profile since. Touring without an album to promote, Cantrell follows up a rousing Music Midtown gig with another mix of AIC hits and new music. Expect the Seattle grunge faithful, curious fans and bootleggers. The Roxy (Horowitz)

CLOUD 10 -- Way out in the musical stratosphere, just past the beatific harmony of cloud nine, a heaving, hypnotic, searing sound emerges. It relies on crisp, hard vocals, and a balance of melodic ambience with crashing distortion. Lyrically thick with spiritual outcries and melancholy musings, it's music that invites you to wallow in your own misery. If that's the release you need, come fly the moody skies. With Elephant and Big Jack. Dark Horse Tavern (Bethea)

THE INCREDIBLE MOSES LEROY -- See Record Reviews, p. 87. Smith's Olde Bar (Horowitz)

OLIVE GRAIN, THE YOUNG AND THE LAWLESS -- Eyedrum's getting ready to vacate its home at 253 Trinity for a new location, and to mark the change the cooperative's artists are throwing a group show. The opening-night party features New York improvisational duo Olive Grain and locals the Young and the Lawless, in which two Eyedrum members explore the possibilities of a stack of cassettes played through a Peavey amp. Eyedrum (Sarig)

TED LEO AND THE PHARMACISTS -- After a cluttered album of loops, Ted Leo his all-star band of D.C. indie-rockers return on The Tyranny of Distance. Tyranny finally captures on tape Leo's rough mix of Byrdsian 12-string jangle, new wave's jerky rhythms and Jeff Buckley-esque falsetto. The band stole the show opening for Rainer Maria at Eyedrum, so there's no reason to not expect as energizing a display this go round. The Earl (Ware)

"TRL" TOUR -- "Total Request Live," the flagship of MTV's Gen Y audience, sets sail with Destiny's Child at the helm. Carson Daly won't be along for the ride, but a gaggle of other "TRL" regulars (Dream, Eve, Nelly and newbies 3LW) will surely fill Philips with hordes of bootylicious Woo-Hoo girls who are ready for this jelly. Philips Arena (Butler)
