String things
XPERIMENTAL PUPPETRY THEATER offers a collection of seriously bizarre puppet shorts restricted to adults age 18 and up MAY 20-23. The lineup includes several highly inventive stories such as Jeffrey Zwartjes' The Continuousing Adventures of Broccoli and Cheese, an improvised saga of horrible living conditions and expiration dates. Also on the bill is Walter Bilderback's Helen, WMD (Woman of Mass Destruction), which compares the war in Iraq with the Trojan War. After performances, the audience is invited to stick around and discuss the show with the artists. $8-$10. Thurs.-Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun., 5 p.m. Center for Puppetry Arts, 1404 Spring St. 404-873-3391. www.puppet.org.-- HK

Bring it on
What is the allure of cheerleaders? Is it just the short, pleated skirts and the occasional peek at the pantylike spankies underneath? I suspect it's the delicious bitchiness we assume the curly haired perk monsters dish out like high school cafeterias serve lukewarm pizza. Synchronicity Performance Group celebrates all that is cheer when BE AGGRESSIVE opens MAY 21. The dark comedy follows two frustrated cheerleaders in their simultaneous quest for glory and loss of innocence. $15-$20. Thurs.-Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun., 7 p.m. Continues through June 20. $15-$20. 7 Stages Back Stage Theatre, 1105 Euclid Ave. 404-325-5168. www.synchrotheatre.com.-- HK

THE VON BONDIES became a household name after frontman Jason Stollsteimer got in a fight with the White Stripes' Jack White, which leads me to a joke. How can you tell the winner of a fight between two indie rockers? Whoever cries first wins. You know, 'cause they're so emotional. Oops, my bad. That's for emo rock. 9 p.m. $12-$14. Cotton Club, 152 Luckie St. 404-249-6400. www.atlantaconcerts.com. (HK)
May 26 - Wednesday
By now you've shown every one of your friends how Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz "sync up," and your search for something nu ends here. THE FIRE THEFT may be descended from post-hardcore emo icons Sunny Day Real Estate, but the group's efforts ring with a more classically influenced prog-rock. Touring partners SECRET MACHINES are even more steeped in billowing psychedelia. Try syncing up these guys to Being John Malkovich. 8 p.m. $13-$15. Cotton Club, 152 Luckie St. 404-249-6400. www.atlantaconcerts.com. (Tony Ware)
