Shabazz Palaces, Al Lover, The Difference Machine, deadCAT

When: Thu., Aug. 28, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $3-$10
In another lifetime, Ishmael Butler was Butterfly, the voice leading Digable Planets’ earthy, jazz-rap excursions. But comparisons to what he’s up to with Shabazz Palaces end there. Indeed, saddling Shabazz Palaces as hip-hop is like filing Sun Ra or Lonnie Liston Smith under “jazz.” The shoe kind of fits, but there are so many cosmic dimensions to the music that pegging Butler and musical cohort Tendai “Baba” Maraire with a genre misses the point. With their second full-length, Lese Majesty, songs such as “They Come in Gold,” “Divine of Form,” and “#Cake,” push dark, abstract grooves deeper and higher into the outer limits of the imagination.
