Short List

April 6 Thursday

Flying fish and fire-breathing dragons might sound like part of the backdrop for a Cirque du Soleil performance, but they're actually part of our very own Atlanta Ballet's production of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. With promises of pyrotechnics bringing a little bang to the happy ending of this heartwarming fairy tale, it sounds intriguing enough to even keep the guys interested. $12-$78. Through April 9. Thurs., 7:30 p.m.; Fri., 8 p.m.; Sat., 2 and 8 p.m.; Sun., 2 and 7 p.m. Fox Theatre, 660 Peachtree St. 404-817-8700. (LB)

April 7 Friday

The Punchline is bringing DOM IRRERA to Atlanta, and you'd have to be a testa di merda to miss him. Included in Comedy Central's list of "100 Greatest Standups of All-Time," Irrera is notorious for his street-smart wit, character variety and authentic Italian humor. $17.50-$19.50. Through April 9. Fri., 8 and 10 p.m.; Sat., 7, 9 and 11 p.m.; Sun., 7:30 p.m. 280 Hilderbrand Drive. 404-252-5233. (Noah Gardenswartz)

If you're uncertain whether your embarrassing home videos have been safely destroyed, be afraid. The folks behind the FOUND FOOTAGE FESTIVAL have procured forsaken home videos and odd industrial training videos from thrift stores, garage sales, warehouses and Dumpsters. The one-night-only screening takes place tonight at Eyedrum. See Flicks. $8. 8 p.m. 290 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. 404-522-0655. (Allison C. Keene)

April 8 Saturday

One of the most influential bands of the grunge era, DINOSAUR JR. never achieved mainstream success comparable to Nirvana or Soundgarden. Its guitarist and lead singer, J. Mascis, is a famously cantankerous man, and a creative split between Mascis and bassist Lou Barlow hobbled the band early in its history. But time heals all wounds, and the two have reunited with original drummer Murph for a tour that winds through Atlanta tonight. $28.50. 8:30 p.m. Variety Playhouse, 1099 Euclid Ave. 404-524-7354. (MR)

April 9 Sunday

If you like your poetry interactive and boisterous, head to Java Monkey for the CHAMPIONSHIP POETRY SLAM, in which 12 semifinalists -- the two top performers from each of six monthly bouts of rockin' the word -- compete to go on to the nationals. The audience judges the evening of spoken word performances, which is sponsored by Poetry Atlanta. Free. 8 p.m. 205 Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur. 404-378-5002. (Sarah Winterfield)

April 10 Monday

Over his 21-year career, CAL RIPKEN JR. established himself as one of baseball's all-time great players. Now that's he's retired, the Hall of Famer has devoted his time to becoming a legend in a whole new field: parenting. Ripken is currently on a book-signing tour for Parenting Young Athletes the Ripken Way, a guide in which baseball's Iron Man explains to parents how to not rule over their little leaguers with an iron fist. Free. 5 p.m. Chapter 11, 1544 Piedmont Ave. 404-872-7986. (Tom DeFreytas)

April 11 Tuesday

If an exhibition of skinless bodies is a bit more than your stomach can handle, may we suggest taking a gander at artist JEANNE SILVERTHORNE's conceptual constructions of the human body's systems. The sculptor and installation artist uses machinery like pumps, fans and motors to create metaphors for the human body. Free. Tues.-Wed. and Sat., 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thurs.-Fri., 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sun., noon-5 p.m. Atlanta College of Art Gallery Project Room, 1280 Peachtree St. 404-733-5050. (LB)

April 12 Wednesday

The Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block of programming has been kickin' ass in the world of animation for a few years now, so it makes sense that some of the creative minds behind that success would make the move into comic books. Adult Swim writer/producer Merrill Hagan and illustrator Bryan Mon have joined forces to create the super-powered heroine TUFF-GIRL. And today you get a chance to nab signed copies of Tuff-Girl's premiere issue and chat with Hagan and Mon. Free. 6-10 p.m. Oxford Comics, 2855 Piedmont Road. 404-233-8682. (Carlton Hargro)
