Circus Show at MJQ, Funkjazz Kafé and more

JULY 26 THURSDAY

Bearded ladies, lion tamers and carnies have good reason to head to MJQ Concourse for the CIRCUS SHOW. Put on by Stephanie Howard and friends, local artists get the circus party started with carnival-inspired artwork, games, conceptual puppetry and an urban astrologer. Fun and games aside, the visual- and performance-art event's $5 admission applies only to those who don't show up in carnival garb. Free-$5. 8 p.m. 736 Ponce de Leon Ave. (Valentina Tapia)

JULY 28 SATURDAY

For its 13th consecutive year, the FUNKJAZZ KAFÉ hits Atlanta with an eclectic blend of artistic expression for a progressive, unified vibe. This year's festival features a wide variety of soul-based music and dance, and also has fashion, food and wellness lectures, spoken-word performances and a bazaar. A large portion of the event's profits will be donated to charity organizations feeding the homeless. $25-$30. 9 p.m. The Tabernacle, 152 Luckie St. 404-659-9022. www.ticketmaster.com. (Samantha Simon)

JULY 28 SATURDAY

A month from now, Atlanta students will return to school. Sadly, more than 2,000 metro-area kids won't have enough resources to buy supplies. Hosea Feed the Hungry holds its third annual BACK TO SCHOOL JAMBOREE today, where children in need can pick up free book bags filled with pencils, pens, paper and other school essentials. Jamboree volunteers and donations are always needed; call to find out how to help. Free. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Turner Field, 755 Hank Aaron Drive, Blue Parking Lot. 404-755-3353. www.hoseafeedthehungry.com. (Jordan Hickey)

AUGUST 1 WEDNESDAY

JESSIE (pictured) offers her own brand of Yorkshire Terrier-Chihuahua-Cairn puppy love. Only 6 months old, Jessie is still a bit shy. Her playful enthusiasm and sweet gratitude show she's a lovable lass. She just needs someone to help her become the confident, well-behaved dog she's destined to be. Visit Jessie and her friends Tues.-Thurs., 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; Fri., 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sat., 1-4 p.m. Atlanta Pet Rescue and Adoption, 720 14th St. 404-815-6680. www.atlantapetrescue.org. (Laura McMillan)
