Project Open Hand is an organization that prepares, packages and delivers food to those who would otherwise go hungry, including senior citizens and people living with HIV or AIDS. But to do all that, the organization needs dough of a different sort. Eat at one of more than 100 participating restaurants today, and 20 percent of your total bill will be donated to Project Open Hand as part of DINING OUT FOR LIFE. Going to the Mars Volta show would have been cool, but we never got off our asses to buy tickets and now the show is sold out. So on to Plan B: Friday Night Fights at EarthLink Live. Essentially, it’s two guys fighting with few rules. Some people call it no-holds-barred fighting. Others call it mixed martial arts. The 28th ATLANTA JAZZ FESTIVAL kicks off a solid month of swingin’ entertainment tonight with a ticketed performance by Alicia Keys at Chastain Park Amphitheatre. We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen captures the legacy of the seminal American smart-punk act. The group transcended the flippant nature of Reagan-era irreverence with cryptic punk anthems. Though guitarist/vocalist D. Sure, there’s nothing particularly new about THE SHINS, but every quasi-hipster from the smallest blogger to wags at MTV and NPR have been jumping on their bandwagon lately. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that the show tonight is sold out. The Portland-based band effortlessly welds its penchant for Barrett and the Beatles into an instantly identifiable, recklessly indie sound, and we sure do hope you got your tickets in advance.
