Twelve Poets to Celebrate Their Art, Rock Against Cancer and more

MARCH 1 THURSDAY

TWELVE POETS TO CELEBRATE THEIR ART, part of the 2007 Association of Writers & Writing Programs annual conference, features poets of distinction Claudia Emerson and Marilyn Hacker among others. Emerson’s Pulitzer-winning style portrays domestic scenes in simple detail. Everyday life experiences vivid reconstructions with National Book Award winner Hacker’s rich and unusual vocabulary. All 12 participating poets contributed to Alhambra Publishing’s Poetry Calendar 2007, which includes a poem for every day of the year. Free. 5 p.m. Agnes Scott College, MacLean Auditorium, 141 E. College Ave., Decatur. 404-471-5056. www.awpwriter.org. (Zoe Britton)

MARCH 2 FRIDAY

In the arena-rock traditions of disease-fighting concerts such as Live Aid, the nonprofit ROCK AGAINST CANCER hosts nationwide (and probably Bono-certified) music events to garner public awareness for children and teens fighting cancer. Tonight it brings its cause to Atlanta with the “Play It Forward” benefit showcase featuring Moses Mayfield along with local talents Beautiful Mess and Grayson Manor. Come support a great cause while listening to live music. Haley Joel Osment would be so proud. $10. 9 p.m. Vinyl, 1374 W. Peachtree St. 404-885-1365. www.vinylatlanta.com. (Ellis Jones)

MARCH 6 TUESDAY

Terriers are a rodent-catching breed and TICA (pictured), a 2-year-old, 45-pound female terrier mix, is no exception. While squirrels barely stand a chance against the high-energy pup, she does show much love and patience with cats and children. Tica’s no couch potato and needs an active and caring family who can run, walk and play fetch with her. Visit Tica and her friends Tues.-Fri., 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; Sat., 1-4 p.m. Atlanta Pet Rescue and Adoption, 720 14th St. 404-815-6680. www.atlantapetrescue.org. (Debbie Michaud)
