Preston Craig has a lot to celebrate. And if there's one thing Craig does well, it's throw a party.
Of course, throwing parties isn't all he does. You can call Craig a promoter, but you also can call him a risk-taking DJ, a well-regarded voice in the music scene and an unofficial ambassador of Atlanta nightlife. "I tell people I've got the best job in the world," Craig says, "I get to make money to talk to girls and drink."
After spending a decade DJing the local rave scene and retiring – at age 27 – from his gig as a computer-network engineer, Craig started organizing dance parties under the moniker Kiss Atlanta. With Kiss, Craig drew hundreds of revelers to Lenny's, spawned the popular blog www.kissatlanta.com (CL's 2006 critics' pick for best local music blog) and eventually morphed his signature night into the even more successful Decatur Social Club, a raucous Friday-night soiree just off the Decatur Square.
Craig's trademark is his constant adaptation in order to stay ahead of what's hip – and not fall back on DJs and tracks that are safe. Thus what started out as a solidly rock night morphed into indie pop one year, disco punk the next and, most recently, cutting-edge electronic.
"I think it's important to have this talent coming through Atlanta," Craig says, "so that when [groups such as] Hot Chip come to America and they only play eight dates, when I call the booking agency they're not downplaying Atlanta because it's not Baltimore or Philly or New York."
With Decatur Social Club hitting its third anniversary, expect go-go dancers, DJ sets from Chicago-based Matt Roan, a Snowden/Kings of Leon after-party – even a moonwalk – at the Friday, June 1, event. The party continues the following night, when Craig hosts an HBO screening party for the pilot episode of the new series "Flight of the Conchords" – complete with free admission, free booze and free New York street food.
"We constantly have new high points," Craig says. "It's the only thing that seems to keep me going."
Decatur Social Club's anniversary party will be held Fri., June 1, from 11 p.m.-4 a.m. at Azul. The HBO screening will be held Sat., June 2, at 9 p.m. at Doo Gallery. Visit www.kissatlanta.com for details.
