CL’S noted acts for THURSDAY.13

MARC ANTHONY — See listing for July 12. Chastain Park (Sarig)

BRAVE COMBO — With album titles like Polkatharsis, Polkasonic and my favorite, Polkas for a Gloomy World, both Lawrence Welk and Weird Al fans better take cover. While the oom-pah beat is obviously their stock in trade, these 20-year veterans add a crazed mix of hot tamale world music to their party that includes Tex-Mex, Latin, ska and even lounge. Their covers are most fun and range from warped versions of Strauss waltzes and “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” to “Tubular Bells,” “The Hokey Pokey,” “Purple Haze” and Foreigner’s “Double Vision” done as a bluesy cha-cha-cha on their newest album. It’s all a hoot, so expect the unexpected and be prepared for a wacky good time. You will be amazed at how much a Polka can rock! Smith’s Olde Bar (Horowitz/Robertson)

JIMMY BUFFETT — Few artists have such a precisely defined niche as Buffett, and no matter what he does he will always be identified as the guy with the most obnoxious fans in the world. Even the dourest metalheads are easier to deal with than the drunken yuppie parrothead mo-fos that follow Buffett. Musically, he has done nothing of note in about 15 years, but that doesn’t seem to make a difference to his cult. They deserve each other, don’t you think? Lakewood Amphitheatre (Kelly)

INTERGALACTIC COWBOY — A one-man band, the Cowboy plays heady electronic space music for settin’ round virtual campfires on the wide-open cyber range. It’s equal parts Robert Fripp, Roy Rogers and Dr. Strangelove. Dottie’s (Nicoll)

MIDNIGHT MAYHEM — Gimmick of the week: sponsored by the folks that make the new “Midnight” Milky Way Bars (and no, I’m not making this up), this show is one of four happening across the country. The Atlanta installment features ska-lite band Less Than Jake and alterna-pop boys Stir. Apparently tickets will be available from “Midnight Riders” who will make their way to various nightspots around town, handing out passes to unsuspecting barflies and insomniacs. Oh yeah, and for you homebound types: all four shows will also be simulcast over the Web. Riviera Club (Robertson)

KENNY ROBY — A former member of the popular regional Americana band 6 String Drag, Kenny Roby comes down to Athens promoting his excellent new solo CD Mercury’s Blues, which continues 6 String’s tradition of hearty, close-to-the-earth, blues-based rock. Caledonia Lounge/Athens (Nicoll)

3 DOORS DOWN, NICKELBACK — Sister Hazel producer Paul Ebersold is the knob-twiddler behind this predictable and average Mississippi-based band’s debut album, which ought to be enough warning to help you plan activities elsewhere. This is the group who do the (currently) inescapable tune “Kryptonite.” Just Super, man. Canadian modern rockers Nickelback prove this stuff isn’t any better on the other side of the border. Roxy (Smith/Sarig)
