Sound Menu September 16 2000 Sun
Noted acts for Sunday, Sept. 17
EUGENE CHADBOURNE & HAN BENNINK — See article. Earthshaking Music (Khalid)
CHICKENS AND PIGS, BOGUES — There’s a very sensible 8:30 p.m. start time scheduled for this excellent show. The Bogues are up first, playing their glistening yet satirical pop/rock jewels. Headlining tonight is Chickens and Pigs, a gritty but upbeat local country/rock band whose sound suggests what might have happened if Paul Westerberg got loose in the henhouse. Red Light Café (Nicoll)
DAPPLED GRAYS — A “newgrass” act in the David Grisman mold, the Dappled Grays host a four-week series of Sunday showcases, where they perform on a bill with other bluegrass and hillbilly jazz-oriented acts. Tonight’s show also features the Mondoloar Quartet. Eddie’s Attic (Sarig)
ROB ROY PARNELL — The name looks familiar, and it should. This is slide guitarist Lee Roy Parnell’s younger brother. Lee Roy’s known as a country artist, of course, and both he and Waylon Jennings had a hand in the younger Parnell’s 1999 debut CD, Jacksboro Highway. Don’t be confused, however, because Rob Roy is a blues harmonica blower in the tradition of Little Walter, George “Harmonica” Smith and Sonny Boy Williamson with a big dose of his native Texas, á la Kim Wilson, Delbert McClinton and Jimmie Vaughan. Blind Willie’s (Powell)
MORGAN ROWE — Recent Virginia transplant Rowe has garnered a great deal of well-deserved attention in the local singer-songwriter scene. Her warm, dark-brown vocals recall Amy Ray at her most introspective, while her emotionally naked songs are imbued with the kind of painful honesty that make a lasting impression. Rowe performs as part of Smith’s singer-songwriter night. Smith’s Olde Bar (Robertson)
ROB WASSERMAN, GROOVE COLLECTIVE — Not just for Deadheads anymore. While the versatile bassist’s collaboration with Dead guitarist Bob Weir has boosted his visibility, Rob Wasserman’s lesser-known catalog of solo efforts has earned him a Grammy and a Downbeat’s pick for jazz album of the year. With his new release, Space Island, Wasserman’s stylistic weather vane points to hip-hop, courtesy of producer Dave Aron (Snoop Dog, Sublime); see review. New York City’s 14-piece ensemble Groove Collective has a musical style for every band member but manages to create a cohesive Latin-jazz-urbonica voice. Expect a scaled-down live lineup. Cotton Club (Hutchinson)
