Noted acts
BB MAK — Not being an avid reader of Teen People, it’s impossible for me to differentiate between the rash of dishy boy bands flooding the market. But this trio from Britain is unique because they, one, write their own tunes, two, play their instruments and, three, can’t dance. They’re huge stars in their homeland and in Japan, have recorded a Disney concert special, opened for Britney and managed to hit every fluff talk show from “Regis” to “TRL.” You know the drill: dreamy guys slinging sugary harmonies over easy-listening love songs, infused with lots of insinuated sex. If you’re 15 and female, you could certainly do worse. Variety Playhouse (Horowitz)
FRED EAGLESMITH — There must be something about the Canadian countryside that drives men to hallucinate music unencumbered by boundaries. Like fellow Canadians Blue Rodeo, Fred Eaglesmith messes with psychedelic elements and tradition. Easglesmith tweaks the Boss pedals and the haunting, heartland music of the Boss. Anyone who appreciates the current direction of artists like Steve Earle or, to some extent, Son Volt, will like this show. Eddie’s Attic (Ware)
MIDGET HANDJOB — Bandleader Keith Morris was a founding member of Black Flag and the Circle Jerks. So what’s a veteran of the ’80s California hardcore scene to do? Well, follow in the footsteps of Jello Biafra and Henry Rollins, and yes, do spoken word. Except Morris brings along an eclectic backing band and his voice isn’t grating like Biafra’s, nor is he ranting or overtly political. It’s just prose plodding along at its own pace. Smith’s Olde Bar (Ware)
