FRI/DECEMBER 8

Noted Acts
BLUE DOGS, BETH WOOD -- A Carolina frat rock band with a solid blues/bluegrass base, the Dogs howl out sounds guaranteed to set Hootie and Dave Matthews fans' tails a-wagging. Opening act Beth Wood is an intensely rocking, wildly talented and constantly touring singer/songwriter, rather unfortunately blessed with the jam-band seal of approval after her recent tour with Jupiter Coyote. She'll have her full ensemble with her, so there may be a drum solo to endure. Oh well, she's worth it. Admission is $8 and two cans of food. Smith's Olde Bar (Nicoll/Smith)

DON HO-ROWITZ AND HIS HAPPY HAOLES -- See Earshot, p. 91. Trader Vic's (Nicoll)

HALCYON -- Florida's Halcyon are always a favorite of the Agnes Scott crowd -- a joyful, enthusiastic and charismatic duo who may remind Attic regulars of the young Indigo Girls. They play two shows tonight, a 7 p.m. all-ages set and another at 9:30 p.m. that's 21-and-up. Eddie's Attic (Nicoll)

KELLY HOGAN AND THE PINE VALLEY COSMONAUTS, AMY PIKE, HUBCAP CITY -- Atlanta music history on parade! Former scene-queen Hogan returns for a hometown show, this time supporting a well-received country album and backed by the country band that recorded it. Her opening acts include Hubcap City, a bizarre performance-art act fronted by Hogan's former Jody Grind bandmate Bill Taft. Also featured is Amy Pike (ex-Continentals), who shared lead vocals with Hogan in another local cult favorite band, Whisper Garden. Hogan will also do a special 8:30 p.m. set (at "near acoustic, granny-decibel level") prior to the big 10:30 p.m. triple bill, which requires separate admission. The Earl (Nicoll)

SLIM CHANCE AND THE CONVICTS --Slim Chance and the Convicts steal the show with their 10-year holiday tradition, selling photocopied 2001 calendars that celebrate friends and community. Proceeds go to the Atlanta Food Bank. Also performing is Sonoramic Commando, featuring members of Deke Dean & Blue Avenue, Caroline & the Ramblers and Sowbelly Trio, plus special guests. Star Bar (Ware)

SONGS: OHIA, WHITE LIGHTS, AMERICAN DREAM -- Currently touring the U.S. performing songs from Ghost Tropic, Songs: Ohia draftsman Jason Molina performs a solo set of his Palace-style folk-blues. While Molina doesn't adorn his songs with much more than his voice and a gently strummed guitar, his heartbreaking and passionate approach to songwriting distinguishes him as an artist of his own accord. The White Lights and American Dream open the show with their respective styles of orchestral and indie-rock, both worth checking out in their own rights. Eyedrum (Radford)

SPIVEY HALL CHILDREN'S CHOIR -- Performing selections from the obligatory carol canon as well as a sampling of some more obscure holiday tunes, the Spivey Hall Children's Choir celebrate the season with three concerts at Spivey Hall. Recommended for those who just can't get enough of their holiday 'sing with us ye cherubim' action. Show time tonight is 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. Spivey Hall (Hutchinson)

VILLAGE VIDIOT ANNIVERSARY PARTY -- East Atlanta's Village Vidiot celebrates two years of film oddity tonight with a musical lineup and art exhibit equally as strange. Featuring work by local underground artist R. Land, the Echo Lounge turns B-rated with the blood splattered sound of Heinous Bienfang, Neil Diamond tributes by Hot August Nights and the pajama-party squeak of the Telepathics. The eclectic celebration also features film shorts, classic movie trailers and prize give-aways. Stop by and congratulate Timmy on two successful years while living out your Russ Meyer fantasies. Echo Lounge (Hatcher)

XBXRX, DEERHOOF -- Alabama's xbxrx abuse the concept of song in a manner similar to Arab on Radar. But just when you're ready to label it a "bunch of noise," they stunningly launch into choreographed moves and synchronized sound. A real blast. Kill Rock Stars artists Deerhoof have also gained a rep for formidable live shows. Squaresville/695 Woodward Ave (Foy)

X-MAS PARTY -- The Turner Foundation sponsors the 2000 X-MAS Party, benefiting Atlanta's children through various charities. Come "Celebrate" the holidays with performances by Kool & the Gang and Mz. Fishe & the New Groove, as well as a Christmas buffet by executive chefs from Canoe. Tickets are a kool $65, but include food and drink. For more info, see www.xmasparty.org or call 404-681-9900. Tabernacle (Ware)
