SUN/DECEMBER 17
Noted acts
BIG BAND CHRISTMAS -- See listing for Dec. 14. Spivey Hall (Ware)

COLONEL BRUCE HAMPTON AND THE CODE TALKERS -- See listing for Dec. 16. Smith's Olde Bar (Smith)

COWBOY ENVY -- With all due respect to Riders in the Sky, these three local ladies rustle up all those classic cowboy harmonies with a whole lot sweeter sound! This is an all-ages 5:30 p.m. afternoon matinee show. Eddie's Attic (Nicoll)

FOREVER -- See Earshot. Eyedrum (Radford)

GODSMACK -- Nouveau-metal heads Godsmack approach rock's hoariest style so tentatively they fail to capture any of its whacked zeitgeist. But therein lies the problem with most modern metal. While a few get it (Monster Magnet spring to mind), the majority content themselves aping the genre's ingrained clichés (glowering attitudes, leather codpieces and Satan namedropping), without embracing its outré philosophy of unadulterated sonic assault. Godsmack may rock out, but they never achieve the pure viscera and foreboding menace that characterizes metal's best moments. Also see review. Philips Arena (Robertson)

PAUL MELANCON, PAT WALSH, KENNY HOWES -- This writers-in-the-round event features former Radiant City songsmith Paul Melancon, who'll act as a sort of junior George Harrison to pop purveyor Kenny Howes' junior John Lennon. Caught in the middle is folkie Pat Walsh, who makes a most unlikely McCartney. This is an 8 p.m. show and it's 18-and-up. Eddie's Attic (Nicoll)
