Noted acts
ADAM DORFMAN, MIMI THOMPSON, BEN WAKEMAN — Three talented singer/songwriters swap songs and try to play on tunes they’ve never heard before. Tonight the quirky but likable guitarist Dorfman, honey-voiced Thompson and circuit regular Wakeman perform in-the-round for what should be a pleasantly varied and wholly entertaining evening of music. Eddie’s Attic (Smith)
FIT TO BE TIED — Roguish gentleman Rob Mallard, a multi-instrumentalist with avant-garde leanings and a country music heart, hosts this evening of post-holiday frivolity and sonic chaos with a set of deceptively peaceful music by the Doves; the Chris Lee Band, featuring several members of the Gold Sparkle Band; and more guests that also will fit the bill. The Earl (Smith)
KEVN KINNEY — Kinney’s back to warm hearts this winter with stories and songs. Expect some bare-bones treatments of drivin’ n’ cryin’ favorites, but also be ready for anything, as the singer is prone to throw in a few odd, yet strangely satisfying, covers. Nashville-based singer/songwriter Jen Cohen opens. Smith’s Olde Bar (Smith)
MORE NOISE TO GO, BLUE VELVETS — A double treat for Nick Lowe fans. This show is billed as “An Evening of Pub Rock.” More Noise To Go is a first-rate Lowe cover band featuring members of the Lizardmen. The Blue Velvets (whose membership includes various musicians from the Bogues and the Hoods) play upbeat originals in much the same jangly pop/rock style. Star Bar (Nicoll)
ROCK*A*TEENS, TELEPATHICS, SHARKS AND MINNOWS — Taking a cue from former member Kelly Hogan, the Rock*A*Teens have decided to grace us with a homecoming holiday show. And what a feast they have planned! Newcomers Sharks and Minnows are the first course, offering some dark post-punk served with a side of irony and abrasive garnishments. The masked Telepathics offer a fun swirled dessert, a tangy taste treat that won’t ruin your appetite for the final course of the RAT’s angular beef stew. Echo Lounge (Smith)
