Sound Menu March 21 2001 Tues

TUES/MARCH 27
ERYKAH BADU, MUSIQ SOULCHILD, TALIB KWELI — Erykah Badu’s progressive soul/hip-hop revue returns to the same hall it hit 26 days earlier. In addition to Badu’s succulent R&B warblings, taste the all-natural, sandalwood and soul food meditations offered by Philadelphia’s Musiq Soulchild and New York City’s Talib Kweli. Prix fixe menu includes Musiq’s R&B hit “Girlfriend,” select cuts from rapper Kweli’s Reflection Eternal album and damn near anything else Erykah feels like fixin’. Fox Theatre (Dames)

DJAVAN — Brazilian superstar Djavan (dee-jah-von) broke through back home in the ’70s, and his songs since have been covered by many, including Al Jarreau in the U.S. His voice combines the smoothness of Caetano Veloso and the soul and jazz of Gilberto Gil. Variety Playhouse (Falstaff)

ROD PIAZZA & THE MIGHTY FLYERS — Harp master Piazza and the incredibly talented Flyers — featuring his boogie-woogie piano pounding, spotlight-stealing wife Honey — have been doing the same basic show for years, but it’s so darn entertaining nobody cares (see Talkin’ Blues). Rod blows one mean harmonica and when he wanders into the audience — even atop the bar — it’s pretty damn cool no matter how clichéd the crowd-pleasing move is. Sure he tugs the applause strings, but he backs it up with a powerful knockout performance. Blind Willie’s (Horowitz)
