SUN/April 08

ATLANTA DOGWOOD FESTIVAL -- See listing for April 7. More in-depth coverage. Piedmont Park (Horowitz)

BOY HITS CAR, UNLOCO, SIMON SAYS -- If you took the "and there's a wind on down the road" line from "Stairway to Heaven" and based an entire band upon it, the result might turn out a lot like Boy Hits Car, an act whose entire dynamic approach seems contingent on that abrupt jump from soft-and-pretty to loud-and-crunchy. Heavy and darkly melodic, Austin's Unloco explore somewhat familiarly sinister hardcore/metal territory, but they do it with a sophisticated ear. Completing this rock-hard bill is Sacramento's Simon Says, which takes a more straight-ahead rock-anthem approach to the intense and fast hardcore archetype. PlanetJam Cotton Club (Hutchinson)

CLANDESTINE -- Clandestine evolved from a basic pipe-and-drum ensemble in '91 in Houston to today's expanded quartet featuring Highland pipes, fiddle, acoustic guitar, hand percussion and traditional Celtic vocal harmonies. Eddie's Attic (Smith)

BRIAN COLE BENEFIT -- Veteran Atlanta drummer Cole remains in serious condition after a recent heart attack and leg amputation. Tonight, friends and bandmates gather to raise money to offset his medical and personal bills. Members of his band Java Monkey, along with guests Tommy Dean, Tinsley Ellis, Francine Reed, Cal Woodard and others are scheduled to perform. Smith's Olde Bar (Smith)

OUTKAST, LUDACRIS, SLIMM CALHOUN -- See listing for April 7. Fox Theatre (Sarig)

RED ELVISES -- Not nearly as irreverent -- at least on album -- as their name implies, these three prolific Siberia-by-way-of-L.A. punk/pop/surf/ rockabilly jokesters play like the Dead Milkmen (see record review). Funny on paper, but something gets lost in the translation. Their live show should be wild, though. Somber Reptile (Horowitz)
