SUNDAY, JUNE 10

COWBOY ENVY, GWEN HUGHES' CD RELEASE PARTY -- Two weeks ago, these three little cowgirls took their act out to the Southeast regional championships of Cowboy Action Shooting. Many a dusty cowpoke laid aside his smoldering Winchester and doffed his Stetson at the sound of their heavenly harmonies. You will too, pardner, at this 5:30 p.m. show. Sultry siren Gwen Hughes of the local retro-jazz scene debuts an all-new CD at 8 p.m. Titled Lost and Found, it contains much more daring and experimental arrangements, with a much richer jazz texture than her previous discs. Her bizarre Charlie Parker-ish version of the Stones' "Under My Thumb" is a particular standout. Eddie's Attic (Nicoll)

JOHN GORKA, ALICE PEACOCK -- Although his work is best known through covers by Mary Chapin Carpenter and Maura O'Connell, Gorka is a prolific and tirelessly touring folksinger with a bulging eight-album catalog. His cozy baritone and literate, melancholy songs are a bit on the gloomy side, but his emotionally soulful melodies are strong. The similarly styled Peacock, an appropriate opener is low key and classy, making this a warm, homey and definitely seated show. Variety Playhouse (Horowitz)

MOUSE ON MARS, VERT -- Dusseldorf-based electro-organic duo Mouse on Mars (see article, p. 73) present their peculiar personal ideology live by performing tracks from their latest album, Idiology, a collection of harmonic, sometimes harsh, vivacious tracks that can be loosely classified as electronica/IDM but touch on rock, dub, jazz and dub. Opening act Adam Vert makes the dirty work of liberated noise quite hypnotic, presenting clustered, cluttered rhythms that scrape away at the walls of his eccentric, melodic soundscape. PlanetJam Cotton Club (Ware)
