SUNDAY, SEPT 23

GHAZAL -- See article, p. 193. Gwinnett Performing Arts Center (Kaliss)

HAZY FANTAZY'S FANTABULOUS SUNDAZE -- The recently opened Icon Bar & Bistro (located two doors down from Karma) welcomes DJ Marc-Alan Gray and weekly guests to explore nu_jazz, deep house, Latin house, rare groove and other tasteful beats. Icon/85 Poplar St. (Ware)

LEO KOTTKE -- As an unplugged guitar legend, Kottke turned heads in the early '70s with his magnetic mix of country, folk and blues. His voice is an acquired taste, but his intricate finger-picking style can hold a crowd spellbound, so be prepared to leave convinced he's the best guitarist in the world -- which he just might be. Variety Playhouse (Horowitz)

MEMORIAL/BENEFIT FOR NYC FIREFIGHTERS -- Today's diverse lineup of music includes SLAM, The Gentle Readers, Rosa Believe, Center, Richard Parsons and a slew of other local musicians who had yet to be confirmed at press time. Donations will be solitcited and sent to the NYC Fire Dept. There will be beer and food donated by local businesses. Music starts at 2 p.m. on the Gazebo by the old courthouse. Decatur Square (Guthrie)

OWLS, NEW END ORIGINAL, SHARKS AND MINNOWS -- Owls reunite emo-core royalty -- four of the five original members of underground legends Cap'n Jazz -- for a sound that is a jittery, arpeggiated attack that's plenty off-beat. New End Original, sporting a debut called Thriller, combine members of bands Texas Is The Reason and Chamberlin for a dual guitar post-punk jamboree. And Sharks and Minnows are one of the Atlanta scene's most enjoyable young bands, bringing plenty of energy and emotion to their three-piece Jawbreaker-esque sound. The Earl (Ware)

ROCK IN THE RAW -- The third installment of the Rock in the Raw series brings together Erik Rowen of Soup, blues virtuoso Oliver Wood of King Johnson, Mike Sickeler of Film, Priscilla Allen of Edith's Wish and Leisure McCorkle. What differentiates this series from other songwriter-in-the-round shows is the camaraderie among the musicians, as well as a willingness to join one another on new material. Smith's Olde Bar (Clifford)

STEREOPHONICS -- These Welsh upstarts come equipped with all the necessary accoutrements to satisfy the most die-hard Brit-pop aficionado: raspy vocals, disdainful lyrics and loads of strumming guitars. Hugely popular in the U.K., less so stateside, Kelly Jones and his merry men are madly plugging the intriguingly titled Just Enough Education to Perform album in the hope of finally conquering the former colonies. Too bad they keep trying to be another Oasis. Cotton Club (Madigan)
