“Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd!” announces the opening line of the gloriously horrifying musical about “the demon barber of Fleet Street.” Stephen Sondheim, one of the 20th century’s greatest musical composers and lyricists, teamed with Hugh Wheeler to recount the Victorian urban legend of a murderous barber bent on vengeance and his accomplice, who bakes his victim’s remains in meat pies.
