New York in the mid-1970s was a Promethean time and place: American punk and the avant-garde were peaking, and in the midst of it all Television released Marquee Moon — a powerful debut that found singer/guitarist Tom Verlaine and Co. channeling the sounds and psychic energies of the times into a wholly new art-rock terrain. Complex yet restrained guitars draw out tension in classic numbers such as “See No Evil,” “Venus,” and Marquee Moon’s 10-minute title track.
